Conference and Juxtapositions Exhibtion in New Delhi, 28-29 March 2016

The 'Becoming Coolies' team hosted the first of three conferences related to the research project in New Delhi on 28-29th March 2016.  Hosted by Dr Ashutosh Kumar, the conference, 'Becoming Indentured: rethinking labour migration in colonial India', attracted around 40 scholars from India and further afield for papers and round table discussions. Papers were presented by Drs Andrea Major, Marina Carter, Ashutosh Kumar, and Professor Crispin Bates, who also gave a keynote lecture.

Danny Flynn's fantastic screen prints went on display at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, part of New Delhi University, on the 26th March for two weeks.  Drawn from archive material provided by members of the 'Becoming Coolies' research team, the prints use layering and the juxtaposition of image and text to evoke the complex associations which surround discussion of indentured labour.  The exhibition was open to the public as well as the conference delegates, and proved to be a dynamic addition to the research panels.
