As part of the 'Rethinking Colonialism and Globailsation' conference (21-23 April 2016), hosted by the Indian Council of Social Science Research at Dakshin-Kamrup college, Guwahati, Professor Bates was invited to present a keynote paper. He spoke on The South Asian Labour Diaspora in the Colonial Era: networks, trust and intermediaries.
