Organised by Dr Ashutosh Kumar, an associate with the project, the conference marked 100 years since the abolition of indentured labour, and celebrated the multi-culturalism of descendants of labour migrants from South Asia.

The Becoming Coolies team are partnering with the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library to host an international conference on One Hundred Years Since the End of Indian Indentureship.  The conference will take place at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi on the 28th and 29th March.

Speakers will include: Prof. Crispin Bates, Dr Andrea Major, Prof. Brij Maharaj, and Ashna Kanhaye, the Ambassador of Surinam to India.

Professor Crispin Bates and Dr Marina Carter travelled to Myanmar to delve into the national archives for the project research.  As their photographs show, Mosques, Hindu Temples, and Colonial Buildings in Yangon attest to the profound and continuing impact of colonial migration on the economy and society of Myanmar.
